#77 How to examine the efficiency and fairness of the judicial system?

  • Post category:Podcasts

When we think of the work of Polish courts in terms of efficiency, the time taken to process cases comes to mind. According to data for 2020, the average case processing time in a district court was 7 months. Is this what efficiency is all about? In the next episode, we talk about how an economist can tell if the judicial system is more or less efficient.

Maciej Świtała, a doctoral student at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw, talks about the method of measuring the effectiveness of the court system using machine learning and text-mining, answering Dr. Justyna Pokojska’s questions about:
– the meaning of „efficiency” and the determinants adopted in the study,
– ways in which economics can ascertain the „fairness” of judgements,
– automating the examination of court judgements,
– the principles of the algorithm for testing efficiency,
– the issues raised by the study,
– the principles of operation of the model and the errors that can be made by a model constructed in this way,
– results of the study and regularities that emerge from the study,
– surprising conclusions.
